 Fri. June 28th

VITALS Stage in the Park

Noon     Dennis & Andy some light heartedness to start the festival off, these two work together like real good – their 4th  year as first act

1pm      Chuck McCandless a mainstay of folk music, this Irish singer / songwriter boated from Ireland and landed up in Manitoba and who now calls the valley home, was there in the beginnings of the Winnipeg Folk Festival and uses his vocals and long necked banjo in a Pete Seeger -ish kinda way 

 2pm     Eugene Smith  and guest – just turned 80, his vocals have become even tastier - what they might call a ‘lifer’ in the music scene                      

3pm     Teacher / Student Showcase -Carlsons -wonderful displays of youthful  dance -  first showcase for this year’s festival and then every Friday at 3pm till the festival ends

4pm      Andy Cooke – a local singer/songwriter with great musical abilities and tales to tell

5pm       Malakai -this 15 year old singer/songwriter/instrumentalist continues to amaze as he embraces his musical talents with gusto

6pm   Russell Wellner Trio - from Victoria, well penned originals and very engaging deliveries of those songs – good response from last year’s appearance meant for a return visit

7pm       Arbutus Roots   West coast rooted, high energy, acoustic guitar driven music from this Cowichan Valley indie-folk pop band

8:15pm   BC Fiddle Orchestra   Daniel Lapp brings along the shining stars of his Victoria  fiddle orchestra just to make us go ‘wow’

Noon    Cowichan Valley Harmonica Band  directed by Sandra Faye Nagy one is never too old to be in a band and have fun entertaining audiences                                         

1pm      Big Dream - Vancouver Island, singer/song trio Dale Manason, Greg and Ingrid Vaughan - a “LOVE “ set of original songs,  keyboards, guitars and tight three part harmony vocals.                                      

 2pm     Reid Williams a gifted songwriter born and raised in the valley, he sings these songs that needs be heard by more audiences, come see why this is said                    

3pm       Sharon Bailey Trio  original roots /country  from Saltspring Island with Sharon Bailey

(vocals / guitar) -Wesley Hardisty (fiddle)- Alan Ker r(upright bass)

4pm      Lip Forest Northern Saskatchewan boy now a Cowichan Valley home owner that writes and sings about those northern roots

5pm     The Rivals as a 4 piece they cover a variety of tunes that make getting up to dance that much easier – one of the many bands we will be presenting on Saturdays at 5pm  that perform regularly on Friday nights at our local Eagles Lounge on Boys Rd. for your dancing pleasures                   

6pm     Alan Dobb roots alt-country genre is where this island performer feels most comfortable writing and singing his well penned originals     

7pm     Daniel Cook and the Radiators  Victoria’s roots- country island rock has a slight pop feeling, their original approach to songwriting helps us appreciate life just a bit better

8:15pm Soul Source 20 piece Victoria community R&B band run by trombonist Nick LaRiviere- performing the music of Sister Sledge, Michael Jackson, Aretha Franklin and so much more – very danceable

 

 

Sun. June 30th

VITALS Stage in the Park

Noon   Tony Turner Trio   Nanaimo-based acoustic based trio that perform original songs penned by Tony - while anchored in the roots tradition, the trio’s repertoire has touches of blues and pop and the songs often have a twist of humour.

1pm     Reuben Shepherd and Too Far Gone   a fine young singer-songwriter from the valley that has been given the opportunity to perform at SunFest this year – come see why                         

 2pm    Anishinaabe Mitchell Sisters  these sisters from the North Bay area now call Victoria home- from a musical family they bring a sweetness to the stage that must be witnessed                                              

3pm     Level Crossing  Mike Regimbal (vocals/guitars) and Dee Cooper (keys/vocals) return with Paul Stapleton (guitars/vocals) and Greg Moore on drums. Cool tunes and originals. Multi genre rock to reggae.

4pm     Anne Schaefer  from Victoria this songstress writes and delivers her originals in a very memorizing fashion-those that know of her will attend and those who by happenchance witness, you will become fans of Anne Schaefer

5pm     Wayne Kozak sax player extraordinaire - whatever songs Wayne brings to the festival with his well chosen sidemen, we the listener, get the finest of musical journeys

6pm     Ultraviolet this trio's creative talents push the boundaries of modern Jazz and electronic music into a dream world – ‘their originality harkens back to the creative enchantment of Keith Jarrett and the electronic virtuosity of Pat Metheny’

7pm     Typsy Gypsy Jazz Band think Stephane Greppelli, Django Reinhardt style traditional  jazz, swing, and blues by this quartet of islanders, you might lightly kick up your heels a bit

8:15pm Diana Braithwaite - Chris Whiteley multiple Maple Blues Awards nominations  and wins to their names  they bring acoustic styled  blues delivered in the finest of musical fashion with Rik Rice on bass, James McRae on drums and Shakey Reay sitting on some tunes with his harmonicas

 

Mon. July 1st

Noon   Mbira Spirit becoming a tradition to have them start Canada Day with an uplifting approach to danceable music for the community

1pm     Kelly Roxanne Girvan school teacher by day and night, she also enjoys her own musical journey and continues to pen some fine songs for us to hear 

 2pm    Cara McCandless a powerful voice along with her songwriting skills makes you glad you had a listen

3pm     Tropic Mayhem  serving up some good old classic rock’n’roll with a beachy feeling, always in demand for private functions, they make sure all in attendance have a good time

4pm     Terry Wicks and friends a singer/songwriter/producer/recording engineer he has a penchant for the blues as he will show us tonite with some originals and a few covers joined by some musical friends

4:20pm     Canada Day Cake - cutting and sharing– sponsored by Canadian Super Store

5pm     Nicholas Campbell from Peterborough Ont., this roots country / rockabilly singer-songwriter and wicked guitarist brings along his fave bass player Rob Foreman to give you his very own musical journeys ( aka: HiLo Players for Pat Temple)  

6pm     Jsa Jsa and the Cariboo Kid   Jsa Jsa (Jeanne Tolmie) and the Cariboo Kid (Daniel Lapp) sing old country and folk songs mostly from British Columbia. There is some yodelling, polkas, swing and honky tonk and always some fiddling to round out the show.                          

7pm     Pat Temple and the HiLo Players  tonite as a 4 piece, Pat brings on his take of hillbilly jazz to the festival that is liable to get your toes a tappin and maybe even a bit of dancin’ time on your part                                 ?

8:15pm Ryan McMahon Trio  ‘he has carved out an almost 20-year career as an independent artist in Canada’s vibrant music scene, a genre fence sitter, hanging out on the edges of country just enough  to say he isn’t, Ryan is both a whisper and a scream’

Noon   Dennis Atkins   has been a regular lunch hour show since we started this festival, his countrified approach to roots music wins people’s hearts - come listen why       

1pm      Meagan Maria   solo  -Island-style music flows through her blend of Spanish and English songwriting. Expect everything from ukulele cha-cha to beautiful piano waltzes accompanied by a unique vocal talent                         

2pm       Brayden Gates   he is at once the quintessential folk singer and a highly exceptional one -his songs are both workmanlike and full of emotional nuance, and they are delivered by a performer who is both a masterfully unassuming storyteller and a blazing-hot instrumentalist                                        

3pm     Teacher / Student Showcase -Kathy White Dancers   teachers and young students demonstrate what they have learned this last year                                                

4pm     Rockland Moran  song writin' story tellin' geetarist -open tuning bottleneck & mandola - novice blacksmith and all 'round troublemaker 

5pm     Renovation Blues Band these island boys have originals and covers that will rock you out with a solid blues delivery

6pm     KingmiXers   the blues is alive and well and this Victoria band play it with fire and passion, driven by sweet, scorching harmonica licks                                                        

7pm     Paul Black Band  raised on gospel and country, the defining moment came when he was given tickets to see Stevie Ray Vaughn, from then on it was nothing but the blues, Buddy Guy, Jimi Hendrix, Muddy Waters. Paul soaked up everything he could get his hands on and he gives back all that he has got

 

 

Wed. July 3rd

Noon      Teo     a fixture over the years as a busker throughout the valley, it is with great pleasure that we have him perform on our stage twice this year        

1pm        Katrina Kadoski   besides writing/producing/performing the awarded Cougar Annie Tales, she is an extremely fine songwriter and singer from the get go                                     

2pm         Chance Cossitt – at a young age, he wants to be a songwriter-came to an open mic at the Showroom and we soon figured we would give him his own slot                                                                                    

3pm        Duncan Does Have Talent- open mic if you want to dance or sing to tracks make sure you sign up even a week or two ahead...only 8 slots per week and we want to make sure as many as possible get the chance to

4pm        Emergence with Hanna Elise  a modern, ancestral-folk musical collective comprised of Hanna Elise and Cody Wicks - with singer-songwriter roots and classical technique, Hanna's vocals soar with clarity and beauty over Cody's intricate and textured rhythms - their music invites the old ways to court the new.                           

5pm          Hip Billy   a unique Nanaimo based music duo consisting of music veterans Bruce Gerrish (Vocals,Guitar, Uke, Banjo) & John Ellis (Vocals, Dobro, Lap steel, Mandolin)  - they have a Retro Cool style that draws from many genres including: Old School Country, Roots, Rock, Rhythm & Blues and catchy Originals

6pm        Nicholas Campbell bringing a fine sense of roots country / rockabilly feel to forefront, from Peterborough Ont. – joined by Rob Foreman on bass

7pm        McCandless Family Band  Chuck and his family are of Irish descent and it comes thru in their foot tappin’ sing along musical journeys of originals and covers – you just might find yourself on the dance floor

7:30pm     Malakai  having just turned 15 on March 21st, he has grown into this wonderful young entertainer that is writing some very cool tunes,  and his guitar / piano skills are just getting even better and better – it is our delight to have the privilege to present him

8:30pm     Braden Gates ‘drawing from the poignant and ironic sensations that occur throughout his working day, he focuses his lyrical imagination into a journal of character sketches - full of wit and wisdom, folksy charm and sharp observations, Gates’ compositions are relevant and, strangely, very rooted in 2016 —even if he plays that fiddle and picks that guitar like an artist three times his age.’

Noon   Mathew – plays the piano and sings-first saw him outside of the Duncan Showroom entertaining people passing by the outdoor pianos – wonderfully engaging

1pm     Jaclyn Childs folk noire is an interesting genre and strong feelings of melancholy will come over you...and she races cars as well as sells real estate

2pm     Scott McGill  singer/guitar player/teacher/songwriter and with those high vocals he does, wow, catch this show

3pm    Teacher / Student Showcase -Canada’s Best Karate - the students are always way excited to come demonstrate their new found skills as taught by Sensei Jordan 

4pm    James Hamilton the sounds of a sitar in the late afternoon outdoors and sometimes with a guest singer and possibly a belly dancer

5pm    From the Earth a Vancouver Island based alternative-island-folk duo  with uplifting harmonies, catchy ballads, and a wide variety of original and unique cover material                

6pm    Braden Gates  from Edmonton this awarded singer-songwriter is a gem of a performer      

7pm    Baby Boy and the Earthly Delights a roots-rock and reggae-inspired outfit based on Vancouver Island that should have you kicking off your shoes and dancing on the grass

8:15pm   The Steadies Earl Pereira, a founding member and bass player/vocalist of a popular and multi awarded Canadian band (Wide Mouth Mason) he co wrote and sang most of the  hits, brings his energetic and worldly stage presence to his infectious roots/reggae/rock band known as The Steadies – your spirit will be uplifted no matter who you are  and you will want to dance

 

 

Fri. July 5th

Noon   Irish Millie    young fiddle player from Peterborough Ont. area kicking up a storm                                        

1pm     Lennon  a valley treat, singer/songwriter in various genres, always a hit

2pm     Linda Tesser familiar tunes sung with passion along with freshly written originals thrown into the mix

3pm    Teacher / Student Showcase -Carlsons a valley dance institution they have stayed with the times, their weekly showcases at the festival will amaze you   

4pm    2 Much Chocoate    this duo play sort of ambient and atmospheric love songs in the rock/pop idiom -  some originals, many re-arrangements with multiple instruments (guitar, bass, 2 flutes, melodica, ukes, harmonica,)  - should be fun  

5pm    Nice Verdes a duo from Australia play music from south America with a  gypsy feel - a regular for our festival, they bring a global feel to the setting

6pm    Hell Katz our local rockabilly trio, they really do rock the stage

7pm     Nicholas Campbell – from Peterbourough Ont. area, roots country duo with a rockabilly feel – the real deal

8:15pm The Great Divide  the music of the Band, second time at the festival in our 13 years, they cover some of the best tunes ever produced in rock’n’roll history

1pm     David Darling from Lake Cowichan, an old style crooner, he brings the past to the present in a very fashion

 2pm    Hill Fillies local troupe who bring an acoustic roots country feel with their originals

3pm     Kele Flemming a deeply gifted singer-songwriter. Kele (pronounced Kelly) gracefully weaves the vulnerability of traditional folk with the raw power of rock & roll.

4pm     Mathew Presidente  keyboardist from Vancouver, he is a LGBTQIA2S+ and is a stellar musician and just a bit of humour involved

5pm     The Bar Starz   featuring Jo-Ann Hearns on vocals - one of the many bands we will be presenting on Saturdays at 5pm  that perform regularly on Friday nights at our local Eagles Lounge on Boys Rd. for your dancing pleasures                  

6pm     Cosmosaurus  a Nanaimo five piece alternative rock band formed in 2018 sharing experiences while in the VIU Jazz Program –a unique blend of progressive introspective funky space rock with an emphasis on vocal harmony

7pm       Bijoux du Bayou   brought to us by the Community Farm Store, this legendary island band performs Cajun styled music to make us all want to dance

8:15pm  Marimba Muzuva  one develops a love for marimba music, it moves your soul and your body, yes, dancing is something you will want to do so come prepared to let yourself randomly boogie

Noon    the Haven from Sydney BC, their harmonies and originals make it easy to enjoy- great way to start off a Sunday

1pm     Nancy Harper / Alexandra Roedder  classical duo that will extremely entertain you- an afternoon in the park with such eloquence                           

2pm    Douglas Brothers  the band is made up of the two brothers, Larry and Wayne. They began playing together as a way of getting out of the dishes. Soon they were asked to play outside, which led them to play in barns and garages, and eventually basements of community halls. At this time, their sound was best described as “pingo pingo or otherwise chunky”.As their popularity grew, they began making up songs as a way of getting out of doing requests

3pm     Lester Quitzau and Matthew Hinton -come journey with Matthew and Lester as they wander through the woods of musical improvisation …From Mozart to The Mississippi Sheiks, they explore an unknown landscape… listening to and following a path unfolding.

4pm      Mike Edel Canadian singer-songwriter who has over 6 million cross-platform streams and has been featured on ABC’s American Idol, extensively on CBC and CBC q, on Sirius XM’s The Verge, The Loft, North Americana and CBC Radio 3 and played hundreds of shows and festivals across North America and in Europe as well as performing at the prestigious 39 Days of July in past years

5pm     Wes Carroll Confabulation walking the tight-rope, balancing detailed arrangements with the power of spontaneity - stretching out into a world of hip-hop grooves, soul and electricity while not losing their jazz footing, their set blends Carroll's distinct, hip-hop-inspired singing, dynamic guitar solos, and modern-jazz horn lines with themes that include the rising cost of living, sexual humor, re-imagining masculinity, distraction, hopelessness, and quirky love.

6pm     Steph McPherson calling Victoria home, this singer / songwriter has grabbed our attention since we first heard  her a couple years back, you will enjoy her, of that we are sure - a voice you will remember, singing lyrics that allow the imagery to shine thru, she is one of our special musical treats        

7pm     Jared Popma a singer/songwriter and guitarist based out of Nanaimo, BC with a background in Funk/Jazz, and lyrics that uncover the hilarious irony that is the human experience -brings along fine fellow VIU Jazz alumni to showcase his tunage

8:15pm  David Vest /Terry Robb-  David, a multi award winner, the original boogie-woogie starchild rockin' and shoutin' the blues since 1957, comes to Duncan along with his stateside pal, acoustic blues guitarist extraordinaire, Terry Robb- they recently recorded an LP due out in Oct. at the Duncan Showroom

 

 

Mon. July  8th

Noon     Meagan Maria   solo  -Island-style music flows through her blend of Spanish and English songwriting. Expect everything from ukulele cha-cha to beautiful piano waltzes accompanied by a unique vocal talent                                            

1pm      Gravitation Bill Hamilton and Burke Rosen are a folk, roots, blues and originals duo from Victoria

2pm      Without a Net  can’t be folk music without having some politics attached, in a style of Pete Seeger / Woody Guthrie                                                                 

3pm     Teacher / Student Showcase -Warmland Dance   collaborative community fostering creativity, a love of the arts and excellence among peers                                    

4pm      Rae and Scott  when two voices find each other and R&B/ soul music is their bonding, we the audience win big time (especially when one of them is Scott McGill)                                                                      

5pm      Kye Goski from the Cumberland area, young Malakai shared a stage with this guy and said he should perform at the 39 Days of July- we said sure

6pm      Lindsay Martel a veteran player, singer/songwriter, raised in the Maritimes who after two years of formal music school drifted back to rock, folk, country, rock and roll and blues, working continuously playing in pubs, night clubs and festivals, or wherever he or his band could find a gig. Now living in our valley, a treat for us

7pm     Beverley McKeen and her Sweet Band she writes great songs and her sweet band breathes even more life into each tune, a festival highlight

8:15pm  Bu VonBlume   from Cumberland BC, a six piece, horn driven, crazy interactive, all original funk, punk, disco, ska, cumbia, reggae whatever-as-long-as-it’s-dancy - super fun-time outer space band.

 

 

Tues. July 9th

Noon     Conor Searl local singer-songwriter music teacher that we don’t see often enough in a public setting – here is your chance

1pm      Jarid Soulfire  singer/songwriter from the valley ,there is a softness about this young man that comes out in his original and his choice of covers keeps your attention

 2pm     Anneda first heard her from off in a distance at our  Saturday Farmers Market years ago, her vocals drew me in closer so as to discover who it was, and here she is, still showcasing her magnificent vocals at our festival years later

3pm     Teacher / Student Showcase -Kathy White Dancers pure joy watching these young students take to the stage                                                    

4pm   Blue Hearts traditional folk style pickin’ blues - duo  Hank Lionheart and Mark Comerford bring an authenticity to the delivering of their blues tunage that makes witnessing them a treat   

5pm   Augie Dawg & the Blues Benders Augie Dawgs’ first blues band and he’s put together an all star line up - with a blend of songs some familiar, some originals and a few off the back shelf - Pierre Millette on drums, Jeremy Sagar on bass, Carson Maertz on guitar, Paul Wainwright on saxophone and Augie Dawg on vocals and his signature one of kind harmonica playing.  

6pm   Gerry Barnum an excellent singer/songwriter, front man and side man for island blues bands or any project requiring a solid harmonica player, a one man act that can get you up dancing

7pm   The Helen Davies Band    aka –Curl,  their band name has changed and a bit of the line up and yet still here to rock you out with their blues standards and originals                     

 

Wed. July 10th

Noon    Naomi Payan   born and raised in France, true love brought her to our valley- a wonderful singer-songwriter and positive influence to the world around her

1pm       Just Jim  this man knows so many older folk/country/pop  songs and he does deliver them with grace                  

2pm       Kelly Roxanne Girvan   school teacher by day and night, she also enjoys her own musical journey and continues to pen some fine songs for us to hear                                                

3pm      Duncan Does Have Talent- open mic please make sure you sign up as soon as you can for one of the 8 slots available (1 song each)

4pm      Eugene Smith  and guest     80 years young, his vocal deliveries are better than ever-brings along Bill Levity to join him          

5pm     James Meyer   watching this young man take to the stage over the years as he has done has been so awesome (and now he teaches) - always an entertaining show that we never know about till the last minute                                                                                     

6pm    Kamile Kapel  her music is original pop jazz – she  plays a keyboard with bass, drums and midi sounds built in so there are beats - she tells funny stories before her songs in a kind of one woman comedy musical show.

7pm    Firebird   local trio made up of three accomplished singer/songwriters - experience stunning three-part harmonies and a fusion of Irish, bluegrass, and pop

7:30pm   Tai Williams a local singer-songwriter branching out into the public eye who believes we need more love songs, and so she writes them/ sings them  with  a voice you must witness

8:30pm   Ty Koch with Nico Rhodes a young singer from the mainland  that performs a variety of musical genres exceptionally well including blues, rock and classical music accompanied by the great Nico Rhodes on keyboard

Noon     Steady-Rollin’ Jay   he sings the blues as he sees it-most interesting outlook                   

1pm        Nico – the open mic at the Duncan Showroom brings us many surprises, this young Nanaimo singer/songwriter deserves to be heard                                              

2pm       Charlie K   a life of stories to be told thru song, Charlie does that oh so well                       

3pm     Teacher / Student Showcase- Glenora Farm Handbell Choir  a treat to find a slot for this ensemble, they bring freshness to a very rewarding afternoon  performance, circle this one if you can and be here

4pm       Dana Sipos  ‘coaxes silkworms out of their cocoons and spins them into song – she inhabited the far north before going nomad and her captivatingly nuanced songs are filled with a wild wind and a haunting surrealism’ –nominated for  ‘solo artist of the year at the 2022 Canadian Folk Music Awards

 5pm      Lindsey Walker roots-rock musician from Edmonton who wants to entertain you – well worth the 50 minutes of your time

 6pm     Lester Quitzau / Damian Graham back again cause they is sooo good – real fine award winning blues based guitarist  combining with an extremely unique drummer that  intuitively takes us to new places where no other music dare travel, most enjoyable

7pm      Rivercity Sidemen from the Cumberland area these guys impressed young Malakai at a recent showcase he participated at and he highly suggested that we present these up and coming musicians

 

 

 

Fri  July 12th

Noon    Lennon    a valley mainstay, rapper to a busker doing covers, Lennon does it all                                  

1pm     Steph Cutler    1/3 of Firebird, she is a fine singer-songwriter and well studied musician who needs to showcase herself a bit more- so we invited her to do a solo show                                            

2pm       Dave Gallant   past president of the Sooke Folk Society, he now calls our valley home and he would love to entertain you all                                                                                               

3pm     Teacher / Student Showcase -Carlsons a valley dance institution they have stayed with the times, their weekly showcases at the festival will amaze you   

4pm     Duke and Goldie  - Mystical Country Twang – this duo having released a debut cd to critical acclaim last year they were able to tour Canada and won many hearts along the way-will they win yours?                                       

5pm     Carlines -retro indie-pop-rock  from Victoria carries the nostalgia of yesteryear with feel good light and sunny hooks.

6pm     Monte and the Pythons  a valley boy, a singer/songwriter with a very cool band showcasing his finely crafted originals - a mainstay in the valley original music scene, Monte Nordstrum and crew deliver some very fine tunage                                       

7pm     Thick as Thieves   aka Row of Crowz for 30 years, the boys still bring the goods to the table or dance floor- still rockin’ after all these years...ya

8:15pm "The Beat Goes On" (a Wrecking Crew celebration)   the west coast had a musical team known as the Wrecking Crew and they performed on more records than you will ever imagine -  yes, you have heard them and didn’t know their importance to the rock’n’roll scene till now- there are so many hits that they were the house studio band on , wow - - tonite you will find out how many of those songs you know

3pm     The Ranters a local folk duo with an auto harp / mandolins / guitar and harmonies and a wonderful repertoire of folk covers                                                                     

4pm     Glenn Foster Group their original songs range from intricate finger-picking ballads and country-flavored pop to highly creative electric rock

5pm     Turnip the Beet - one of the many bands we will be presenting on Saturdays at 5pm  that perform regularly on Friday nights at our local Eagles Lounge on Boys Rd. for your dancing pleasures                  

6pm     Renfrew Road a songwriting duo living in Shawnigan Lake, raising their new family reflects in their music   - maybe a full band today, we will find out at show time

7pm     Ramon Chicharron     multi-awarded, based in Montreal and originally from Colombia, their music is inspired by the afrocolombian rhythms of cumbia and champeta, blended with modern sounds to create a tropical fusion.  .

 2pm   KeyWinds Kids - this the classical KeyWind Trio plus friends on flute and percussion

3pm    Alli Bean a Canadaian singer and pianist out of Victoria who started with classical music in the 90’s and ended up exploring many popular styles of music from country to rock to jazz and r&b – you will enjoy

4pm    Magnolia Buckskin  three gals featuring gorgeous three part harmonies utilizing guitar /banjo/mandolin/accordion and bass to deliver a blend of indie bluegrass, folk, and acoustic pop music  

5pm    songwriters in the round Jeff Plankenhorn / Ryan McMahon / Cara McCandless  on stage together doing 2 or 3 songs each and aiding in each other’s choices

6pm    Stone Poets  a trio, they create exceptionally moving music that genuinely matters- do join them to hear their newest music as well songs from their extensive body of work

7pm     El Combo Cumbialandia classic cumbia music, brazilian forro and a mix of latin american rhythms - rich lyrics and high energy dance beats for all ages to enjoy - "as students of heavyweight Latin grooves and the ancestral traditions that make up their sound, they feed a vein of cultural inquiry with every show, bringing audiences into the story and power of real roots music".

8:15pm  Jeff Plankenhorn   20 years on the Texas music scene as a much requested sideman and as of late a very fine singer/songwriter, he now calls Campbell River his home – exquisite guitar playing with very tasty use of a slide bar – tonite as a trio

Noon     Jeffrey Randle     grew up on Vancouver Island, his musical style comes from his Canadian roots – his dad played the fiddle and he got him started on the guitar when he was 6 and he is still at it

1pm      Jonny and Derrick- from Sooke  they play a mix of classic rock / blues / folk / and originals – Derricks guitar adds some jazzy undertones to Jonny Mack’s originals

2pm       Tania Hill/Scott McGill  a student and teacher like to perform for us each year, come give a listen, most heartwarming                                  

3pm      Teacher / Student Showcase -Warmland Dance collaborative community fostering creativity, a love of the arts and excellence among peers                                    

4pm      Joe Stanton   from the Sunshine Coast we convinced this fine singer/songwriter to venture over to the valley with his guitar and well written originals – very good storyteller                                                                                                           

5pm      Billie Shirley Lorna Woods a singer/songwriter and a darn good photographer –although everyone has danced at one of her Saltspring Island gigs when she brings the band out- today is the reflective solo show that we are sure you will enjoy

6pm      David Barber spent the last 15 years being a sideman and has toured with artists including Colin James, The Chieftains, Barney Bentall, Dallas Smith, Chad Brownlee, Aaron Prichett, Aaron Goodvin and many more - he also played banjo on the 4x Platinum hit, Two Heads, by Coleman Hell - and now he can say he played the 39 Days of July 2024

7pm      Ryan Oliver Juno awarded saxophone player along with a visiting Juno  awarded drummer adding in a super bass player from the island, we will experience a musical treat

8:15pm   Patsy Cline Tribute   the name says it all – an icon in country / pop music of the 50”s  - this group of Victoria musicians bring to life such hits as ‘After Midnite” “Crazy” and  “I Fall to Pieces” , songs that have not lost their value in today’s world.

3pm   Teacher / Student Showcase- Kathy White Dancers   bring along those cameras for sure                                                                      

4pm   Terry Wicks and Friends a singer/songwriter/producer/recording engineer he has a penchant for the blues as he will show us tonite with some originals and a few covers joined by some musical friends

5pm    James Vickers Band   James is a 14 year old blues singer/ guitarist from Nanaimo who is tearing up the dance floor at the Queen’s Sunday afternoon Blues Jams these last 3 years with his weekly appearances – stellar band mates that should be heard – bringing along a bunch of his recent debut EP’s 

6pm    Brandon Isaak     Juno and multiple Maple Blues Awards nominee this year, he is the real deal and should be witnessed as a solo artist as well as with his band (July 24th City Square Stage)                                                                         

7pm    Michael Patrick Band   calling Nanaimo home, guitarist/front man Michael Patrick always brings along a stellar band of blues players to work it out real good (and with special guests)

2pm    Bob Johns a founding member of Bluegrass Fever, he also has a roots/country music styled solo career and also directs the Chemainus Bluegrass Festival in Waterwheel Park

3pm    Duncan Does Have Talent- open mic make sure you sign up asap as there only 8 slots a session and only one song / dance each

4pm    Jenny Allen the history for this Alberta folk singer-songwriter in the Cowichan Valley goes way back to the origins of the Island Folk Festival, of which she performs at this year for this 40th anniversary of the IFF

5pm    Sarah Hiltz   a contemporary folk songwriter based in Toronto, she going to be on Vancouver Island for some touring and a family wedding and so a wonderful chance to let you hear her                   

6pm   Ian Skorchka aka:Fabián from Argentina and an original  member of the band Entagados, this guitar playing whiz has been writing up some new songs which we get to hear on this BC tour of his                                                                     

7pm    Kids Today   Hammond organ / drums – they approach the ‘true value of such a collaboration’ as a wonderful adventure -7th year at the festival

7:30pm   Maryna Krut    a well known singer-songwriter and bandura player from the Ukraine is on tour in Canada and our timing was that we were able to have her perform at our festival as well as the many larger festivals in the country  

8:30pm   David Essig having performed at the many larger festivals in Canada over the years, this veteran is still in the now, writing songs of humanity with political undertones – it is from our elders we receive the knowledge to go on further and understand the paths we must take

1pm     Janet Falkner  a veteran folkie and recently moved to the valley, come make her feel welcome                              

2pm    Gravitation Bill Hamilton has teamed up with his friend Burke Rosen to bring us some fine ‘folk’ music

3pm     Teacher / Student Showcase -Judy Hogg Celtic Rhythm Dancers these students work so hard to do their best, make sure you take advantage of the photo ops  

4pm      Richard Moody    a transplanted Manitoban, he is solo, voice and guitar performing from a recent musical release Tobacco and Rose                        

5pm     Adam Dobres  an well regarded, extremely fine acoustic guitar player now lives in the valley, he will be performing tunes from his latest recording

6pm     Ashley Wey Trio  a fine jazz singer-songwriter/ piano player and such an entertainer to boot- a do not miss concert

7pm       Carmine sultry vocals float above punchy piano, while driving bass lines meld seamlessly with grooving beats. Carmine is a band dedicated to one thing: getting as many bodies on the dance floor as humanly possible.

3pm     Teacher / Student Showcase – Carlsons  memories made never to be forgotton

4pm     Nastasia Yerofeyeva   music mirrors her journey, from being raised in Kyiv on folk and protest songs that her father used to sing, to Canada’s contemporary jazz scene. Now, she fuses all her influences and expands on her father’s legacy, with a mission to share the Ukrainian soul with others                         

5pm     Mexican Bus Ride happily residing in the Cowichan Valley  ,The Mexican Bus Ride ’s moto is simply having fun and trying get you to smile and tap your toes - very local groove with a West Coast feel

6pm     Trevor Davies Band   back living in the valley after some wonderful years in Montreal plying his musical skills  brings together Allan Cameron drums, Tyler Lieb bass and possibly pedal steel to join in presenting Trevor’s well tailored originals          

7pm     Porter Brothers    they have the essence of pure rock’n’roll in their well crafted and extremely finely delivered country/farm roots style rock music

 2pm    Theo Massop -shakes up this musical approach with flavours of reggae, blues, folk, country and straight ahead rock, all performed without pretension and from the heart.    

3pm      Peter Paul Van Camp and Mark Wonneck   “Entertainment …Like Mom Used To Make” -with a combination of rhymestering and songs, wit and wonderment, tenderness and goofiness, Peter and Mark will leave you cheered, astonished and content

4pm      Sue Decker  slide guitar is where this gal shines, while presenting her original tunes she brings great players with her to up the ante                    

5pm     11th Hour    5 piece band with vast selection of cover tunes-  one of the many bands we will be presenting on Saturdays at 5pm  that perform regularly on Friday nights at our local Eagles Lounge on Boys Rd. for your dancing pleasures                  

6pm     The Big Mess blues / funk / latin / broadway / techno / jazz / trip-hop / swing /  rock, somehow they are able to smoosh all of this together into a full blown musical spectacle - their performance blends theatrics, technology and improvisation and is most enjoyable                                                    

7pm      Smokestacks     6 piece band of young blues players from Victoria are keeping the blues alive   – a big hit closing off last year’s 39 Days of July they are coming to aid us in dancing at this year’s festival

1pm     Fouray  in a barbershop quartet fashion, these four from up island bring a breath of fresh air in their vocal arrangements of standards Encore      

 2pm    KeyWinds Trio plus friends   a chamber group performing Classical and Romantic works written for Piano, French Horn, and Clarinet. The professional musicians are all from the Cowichan Valley and have performed together for several years – guest flute and percussion

3pm     Steluta     performing Renaissance.( +, Klezmer and Romany tunes, lively Greek Dances as well as original tunes – always a hit         

4pm     Marketplace  an intergenerational, hard hitting political folk duo made up of father and son, Chris and Solomon Hergesheimer from the mainland

5pm     Low Winter Sun! guitar and cello driven rock from this 4 piece band from Victoria,...quite pleasant, check them out on YouTube Duncan Showroom channel

6pm     the Awakeneers  honest vocals sweetened with multi part harmonies and supported by rich acoustic instrumentation, a nomadic band of multi-instrumentalist songwriters, most of whom are siblings                                                 

7pm     Jonas Shandel   frontman and co-founder of the Vancouver band Headwater / five years starring as Johnny Cash in ‘Ring of Fire’ and ‘Million Dollar Quartet’ at the Chemainus Theatre   – his  performances are always full of heart, humour, melodic and captivating songs that almost fall into their own unique genre as they are timeless, yet familiar and tell many beautiful stories. Expect to be charmed.

 2pm    Beverley McKeen with Eugene Smith   a very fine singer/songwriter joins forces with djembe player extraordinaire                        

3pm     Teacher / Student Showcase -Lara’s Belly Dancing Studio   always a hit at the festival she brings two very new dancers with their very own ‘camel dance’ routine                                   

4pm     Mia Kelly    writes and performs in both French and English, Mia enthralls listeners with a distinctive blend of folk, rock, and blues and is making her mark in the Canadian folk music scene       

5pm      Kaeley Jade Wiebe   an award-winning Métis singer/songwriter, actor, and multidisciplinary artist based in Edmonton, Alberta –blending lush imagery and hooky melodic lines to create her own brand of pop-forward indie folk music 

6pm       Neavv  singer/songwriter/producer new to the valley -  classically trained, pop took over and the results are awesome- there is an edge to her music that cuts to the bone - and that voice!!!           

7pm     Reuben Shepherd and the Too Far Gone  young singer/songwriter so impressed us 2 years ago at our open mic that we have given him 2 slots this year-also he is scheduled for SunFest 2024

1pm     Anneda first heard her at our  Saturday Farmers Market years ago from off in a distance, her vocals drew me in closer so as to discover who it was, and here she is, still showcasing her magnificent vocals at our festival years later                          

2pm     Jan Randall  keyboardist extraordinaire, singer-songwriter from Victoria presenting a whole concert of originals                            

3pm   Teacher / Student Showcase- Kathy White Dancers    pure joy watching these young students take to the stage                                                 

4pm   Don Wilke     slidin’ on his national steel is one of his fave thangs to do -  and write songs                                             

5pm   The Tami Blazer Trio – featuring Tami on vocals with Kelly Fawcett and Carson Maertz on guitars – a hit at the Queen’s Sunday Blues Jams in Nanaimo

6pm   Third Degree fine electric blues acknowledging the old guys and still bringing in the new tunes , these local guys deliver                                           

7pm   Thor Jonsson Band  Thor has called the valley home for quite awhile now and has brought his brand of blues guitar playing to many people - always surrounded with stellar players, no better way to enjoy this Blues on Tuesday series

5pm      Nice Verdes a globe trotting touring acoustic duo that bring a sense of gypsy / South American / latin feels with a guitar and an accordion and very cool harmonies

6pm      Camille Miller  catchy,pop/rock,guitar-wielding, soul singing,RED-HEADED pop junkie ... along with some friends – she is back in Canada for a short time and of course she had to play the 39 Days of July 2024

7pm      Beatlemania unplugged a local  vocal acoustic Beatles tribute band that perform songs from the Beatlemania era. From the Beatles first album Please Please Me to their sixth album Rubber Soul, Beatlemania Unplugged replicate the John, Paul, and George vocals as on the original recordings.

7:30pm     Miss Emily   “an angelic voice with just a hint of sultry devilishness. This gal is a rocket ready to take-off!” · (The Tragically Hip) - multi Maple Blues Award winner, she comes to the 39 Days of July  - quite the singer-songwriter - with Kelly Fawcett on guitar

2pm     Linda Tesser   she sings cover tunes that move you real well and maybe she will sing a couple of her well written originals  - joined by  Gordie Allen on guitar  

3pm     Teacher / Student Showcase -Judy Hogg Celtic Rhythm Dancers such wonderful young dancers with such intent

4pm     James Hamilton the sounds of a sitar in the late afternoon outdoors and sometimes with a guest singer and possibly a belly dancer

5pm     Lance Lapointe    known all over as the consummate sideman it appears he is a songwriter as well having just recorded his first originals CD, he comes to the 39 Days of July  ready to let it all out                                                   

6pm     Christopher Jackson from Kingston, Ont. his first venture to the west coast and not his last- a superb singer/songwriter in a folk fashion

7pm     Grinning Barretts  they have taken Celtic sounds and mashed them up with gritty punk rock passion to create a wild ride of traditional that will move your feet into jig formation and bring out your rabblerouser

4pm        Allison Brown she brings her distinctly tuneful, powerful voice to her endless collection of hand-picked roots music repertoire alongside crafted original songs - her vocal elasticity stretches three octaves; she delivers melody with conviction

5pm        Andy Cooke a songwriters songwriter, this valley resident is most pleasant to listen to

6pm        Rumblejam Grooves   7 young jazz musicians from the Comox Valley lookin’ to be heard and what better audience than our attentive festival goers

7pm       Pozitive Rebellion  reggae vibes oozing off the stage- one must dance, this local 5 piece brings it to the people in manner that we all become one

8:15pm  Clay Pigeons  5 piece acoustic band do a tribute to the music of John Prine, Townes Van Zandt, Blaze Foley, Guy Clark, Iris Dement, Lyle Lovett to name a few - the arrangements are their own, featuring beautiful lush interplay between the fiddle and mandolin, with the members taking turns on lead vocals and supporting each other with big 4 part vocal harmonies.!

 2pm   Island Storytellers Presents -Island storytellers gather in  various groups up and down the island to hone the 'ancient' art of storytelling, from the Victoria Storytellers' Guild, The Around Town Tellers - Nanaimo, and the Mid-Island Storytellers, based in Qualicum Beach/Parksville

3pm    Homespun Band a folk fusion band from Vancouver Island, the creation of singer/songwriter Duncan Sutherland, they blend different musical genres that echo folk, blues, bluegrass, swing and country

4pm    High Definition Chicks trio of ex-Curl band members Helen Davies (lead vocals and guitar), Dee Cooper (keys and vocals) and Christa Brenan (percussion and vocals). Blues, R&B and a bit of country with a few cool originals thrown in.

5pm    SueMack     two gals from Victoria that front the Rainshadow AL Band (Sun. Aug. 4th City Square Stage) and also have their own duo giving up some original tunage

Noon    Andy McCormick  his collection/selection of K-Tel hits takes us all back to the days when we first heard these tunes and surprisingly having us sing along 

1pm      Bruce Cates   state side boy now calling the valley home brings the feeling of a good old fashioned home hootenanny to the table                                             

2pm      Beverley McKeen   a mainstay of the valley music scene, this skilful (and well dressed) singer/songwriter has quite the following for her thought provoking, environmental, sometimes whimsical lyrical journeys                                                   

3pm     Teacher / Student Showcase- Roth Performing Arts Studio      performing arts studio in Ladysmith bringing some dancers and singers                       

4pm      Kate Stott   first heard Kate at an open mic in Victoria and immediately asked her perform for us                                         

5pm      Neil Trett   from Victoria, another frequent ‘open mic’ flyer was impressive with his performance one evening and so he was invited to the Cowichan Valley                      

6pm      Meagan Maria Trio   as a trio today, Paul Jutras on drums and Hayden Johnson on bass,       island-style music flows through her blend of Spanish and English songwriting. Expect everything from ukulele cha-cha to beautiful piano waltzes accompanied by a unique vocal talent        

7pm      Elise Boulanger Chamber-Folk-Pop artist, a bilingual multi-instrumentalist and environmental advocate that creates cinematic dreamscapes

Noon    Choralina Chante  from Victoria a musical healer who brings positive and intuitive songs to the festival                                 

1pm     Charlie K  coming up from Sooke to bring his take on folk/roots music as it pertains to his life’s stories

2pm     Paul Swannell    from England visiting relatives in the valley, we agreed he should strut his songwriting skills and choice of covers whilst he is here                               

3pm   Teacher / Student Showcase - Kathy White Dancers  pure joy watching these young students take to the stage                                                    

4pm    Danny Boy Phalen   from Ontario he captures the essence of traditional acoustic delta blues that will guarantee him a place in history        

5pm    Deb Rhymer  host of the weekly Victoria Blues Jam for years we finally have her on our stage singing the blues as only she can - stellar backup band

6pm    David Gogo  solo show showcasing his recent release of his new LP  ‘Yeah’              

7pm    Thomas Morris and company  - two guitars, bass, drums, sax and  keyboards- they come to make us boogie on the dance floor - includes Trevor Manuel / Rick Salt / Todd Sacerty / Pierre Komen and special guest Thomas’ grandfather Bryan Chamberlain -

Noon   Bill Levity/Leenie Beenie   poet / thespian / singer / songwriter who enjoys sharing glimpses of his inner self he has invited Leenie Beenie and possibly others to join him

1pm     Jon and Derrick  from Sooke not only does he photographically document who performs at the festival when he is around but we get him up on stage with his buddy Derrick to perform a mix of classic rock / blues / folk / and originals  – Derricks guitar adds some jazzy undertones to Jonny’s originals

2pm     Boneyard Babes  an ensemble of Indigenous and queer-identifying musicians committed to building a sense of community through music -with a wide representation of originals, traditional folk, roots, and old country, their music embodies percussion, rich harmonies and a powerful female presence - their music evokes a deep sense of healing connection to Mother Earth and Turtle Island, bringing warmth, kindness, humour and a passion that is evident in all they do                 

3pm     Duncan Does Have Talent- open mic please make sure you sign up as soon as you can for one of the 8 slots available (1 song each)

4pm     Zonnis   powerful vocals with compelling lyrics, from Victoria, this husband and wife touring duo bring it on full folk tilt

5pm     Jemma and the Good Thing Thing    island-grown folk-pop `based on Cortes island  she ventures to Duncan to showcase her lastest recording project produced by Corwin Fox

6pm     Mark Crissinger  known in some circles as a blues player he also writes his own stellar originals and his delivery is as good as it gets – Jay Stevens on bass fills it right out perfectly                   

7pm    Anneda  and the Flood  Anneda has a new cd out of her original songs and with the band   the fullness of the production is brought forward

7:30pm     Dennis Atkins with friends, he does justice to many cover tunes but tonite he brings his own songwriting skills to the forefront-a roots country, honest kinda feel with a very smooth delivery- most refreshing                           

8:30pm     Paul Pigat  one of the most restless, combustible musical imaginations ever crammed like so much canned heat into a single body, blessed with a jazz man’s sheen, a rockabilly heart and a hobo’s soul, there are not many genres of music that don’t pull at Pigat’s wayfaring imagination like a magnet...a do not miss show

2pm      Leenie Beenie / Mark Holley  Leenie lights fire in other musicians and this pairing is so delicious     

3pm     Teacher / Student Showcase - Forte School of Music  adult vocal students singing to the piano accompaniment of Vicki Gamble  

4pm        Moonlight Talkers   two local singer/songwriters, Cara McCandless and Naomi Payan of PixElle, join forces with a new project – we are sure you will enjoy  

5pm      David Santana Trio   jazz guitarist and composer from Victoria who with every performance, his  aim is to bridge the gaps, transcending individuality to create a collective experience - it's a celebration of unity, an invitation to embrace our shared humanity - through music, we rekindle connections and reawaken the echoes of our common essence, nurturing a sense of togetherness amidst the vastness of existence - when this is accomplished music is indeed medicine.                                                                                            

6pm      Desmond Day a singer/songwriter out of Victoria,  he is known for engaging his audience in a fine fashion of inclusion

7pm      Ed Peekeekoot  of the Cree Nation, gentle local singer / songwriter / guitar player / flautist and well respected entertainer (and a good carver / artist )

2pm      Malakai   born and raised in the valley this young singer/songwriter/multi –instrumentalist is a fine way to end this year’s Lunch in the Park Series

3pm      Teacher / Student Showcase - Carlsons  gonna be some hip hop  / break  dancing for sure   

4pm      Felicia Harding  she is gifted with a magical voice capable of both direct intensity and soothing serenity – she has social media presence that you should follow                                                       

5pm       Zach Thompson  local singer-songwriter brings his band to perform his great tunage                                         

6pm       Dance Temple Cowichan Ali and Chris have put together an awesome electronic music thang playing tasteful African inspired music with lots of love and live samples with chris’s grooved percussion ... extremely danceable                                                                                      

7pm       Pinebox Rebellion  these seasoned local players have their own genre, kinda rockish indie pop that works real well and creates a fun energy - they have been recording new tunes as of late and are ready to present them

8:15pm Bandidos  from Mexico, they were a big hit every where they performed in BC during 2023 -we couldn’t find a date last year so they came back this year – very danceable covers

1pm        Monica Lee  singer-songwriter from Vancouver, she uses her powerful voice, sense of humour and poetic chops to warm our hearts as well as                          

 2pm      The Bastions of Rock  two young brothers joined by dad on drums, they come to rock out the covers they have learned   

3pm        Uke's Misbehavin' yes, it involves ukuleles and includes wonderful harmonies

4pm        The Love Cats     classic rock, pop, R&R, with a little country for flavour., they return to their favourite festival                                  

5pm        Ear Candy  -one of the many bands we will be presenting on Saturdays at 5pm  that perform regularly on Friday nights at our local Eagles Lounge on Boys Rd. for your dancing pleasures                  

6pm        Karen and the Managers pop/rock and such, this 6 piece band from Victoria brings on the covers we can all dance to

7pm        Lost Talkers  from Victoria - original indie/pop rock that has lots of flavor that you want to make you –

8:15pm    Nautical Disaster they do their damndest to sound just like the original material-they jam regularly to stay tight on the songs and gel as a group, so when their lead singer gets going on a lengthy improvised rant on the outro to "Looking for a place to happen" the band can just keep things rolling seamlessly -the frontman has some big shoes to fill, but the Gord above is smiling because Ryan does a good job

1pm      Tim Johnson  Band a small jazz ensemble from Pender Island, BC.  playing original music and a range of standards in various jazz modes including bebop, hard bop, swing, funk, Latin and blues

 2pm     The Anna McAndrew Trio  new to the valley this lady can sing with the best-great musicians joining her

3pm       KC and The TomCats  the best of smooth jazz  presenting  vocal numbers from the Great American songbook. Led by veteran keyboardist Phil Newns and his vocalist daughter KC, the members of this tight quartet all hail from Vancouver Island -enjoy  the upbeat standards that have been performed by some of the great women of song

4pm       Blackwood from the east coast dynamic duo of piano and bass clarinet- a musical experience that must be witnessed

5pm       Keanu     a Canadian/Native American guitar player and composer from Nanaimo-    his debut album Celestial Desire was released in March 2022 to critical acclaim and earned him a nomination for "Instrumental Artist of the Year'' at the 2022 Western Canadian Music Awards                                     

6pm      Follow the Sound    saxophonist and composer from Victoria BC , Rowan Farintosh,  gathers some very fine young island jazz players to join him on these musical journeys       

7pm       Lady O and the Omen from the valley this stand up bass player has some great tunes she has penned and covers some fantastic classics- and the Omen are always stellar
